Pukeko – 4 – 5 year olds

Here our focus is on getting your child ready for school. Children are encouraged to lead their own learning and have opportunities to engage in authentic learning experiences which include planting, gathering, preparing and cooking food, art and craft, construction, and short walks in the local community.

The Pukeko environment is designed to support both individual and group learning, and our mat times in particular become longer and provide more focused learning. We also ensure that there are tools, space and support to encourage early writing and reading skills, as well as numeracy. These more specialised learning experiences are made available to children on a daily basis.

We believe that it is our role to support your children in the best way we can, to ensure a smooth transition from centre to school. This means that our teachers regularly review and carefully plan a transition to school programme that is FUN, inspiring and individual to each child.

Every day we run our highly successful transition to school programme. This programme is carefully planned to provide learning experiences extend children’s personal interests, and those of the curriculum areas, so that children have the very best transition to school possible.

Our transition to school programme is very special to us at McLeod Kids. We have developed partnerships with our local primary schools –Tirimoana Primary and Freyberg School – and both have given high praise for the strong learning base with which we send our children off to them.

Our transition to school programme is designed to offer fun, stimulating learning times that extend children in the following areas: Public speaking, problem solving skills – teaching children to think, personal development, math concepts, counting, identifying numbers as symbols, shapes, waiata, colours, story-telling, science concepts and experiments, physical skills, being organised, taking messages / direction, large physical skills (gross motor), literacy (recognising letters and encouraging writing) and self-help skills.
